Compaq will acquire Digital Equipment Corporation as a wholly owned subsidiary. The deal must be approved by stockholders and should be finalized in a few months.
The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Netscape will no longer be providing or integrating a Java Virtual Machine with its products. It will provide hooks for a third party VM to work with its browser, but will not take further responsibility. Netscape has a lot to say about what a good idea this is, but the bottom line seems to be that it was too much trouble and too expensive to continue, when other JVMs are out there that do the job.
