Still confused about the Digital Alpha/Intel deal? (Several months ago several media sources reported that Digital was selling the Alpha processor to Intel, where it would presumably be scrapped.) A Techweb article sheds some light on the subject. Intel will be producing the chips for Digital, saving money by eliminating expensive manufacturing facilities. On the other hand, if Compaq buys out Digital, the Alpha's life might again be threatened.

A Linux Weekly News story asks why anyone would want source code for the OS and software they use. The answer: not everybody does, but those who are qualified to make their sofware better can do some really cool stuff when they have source.
