National Semiconductor will announce today its plans to combine most of the microprocessors used in today's computers onto a single chip, paving the way for sub-$500 PCs.

A PC Magazine article tries to compare the speed of Java applications with Windows apps, and finds that it's not so easy to get a definitive measure.
